Centrient’s SBTi-validated climate targets reinforce environmental commitment
- SBTi’s validation of Centrient’s near-term science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets reflect the company’s commitment to minimising its environmental footprint while manufacturing sustainable medicines
- Centrient’s targeted reductions lead to scope 1 and 2 emission reductions aligned with a 1.5°C global temperature pathway, ensuring Centrient is taking effective measures to mitigate the impact and effects of greenhouse gases on climate change
- Centrient commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 46.20% by 2031 from 2022 as a base year.* Centrient also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and fuel and energy-related activities 27.50% within the same timeframe.
Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 4 September 2024 – Centrient, a key B2B supplier of sustainable, enzymatic antibiotics, next-generation statins, and anti-fungals, is proud to announce that it received validation for its science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation underscores Centrient’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact and actively addressing climate change by aligning our targets with the necessary measures to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
“The SBTi validation is an important development for Centrient,” said Rex Clements, CEO of Centrient. “It shows that our environmental strategies are not just ambitious but actionable, science-based targets. Our commitment to these targets is a critical path forward for our business and ensures our organisation is taking concrete steps to fight climate change and safeguard our planet for future generations.”
Centrient’s SBTi targets are a key piece of the company’s ESG Ambition 2021-2030. The company has an important responsibility in manufacturing foundational medicines sustainably. Over the past several years, Centrient has made substantial progress on all its ESG targets set out in its Ambition. The company has reduced its waste and water footprint as well as its greenhouse gas emissions through energy-efficient projects and increased its use of renewable electricity.
“The validation by SBTi serves as another important milestone in Centrient’s ESG journey, providing a clear and credible standard for our climate action efforts,” said Centrient’s Chief Technical Officer, Vesna Kapelj. “These ambitious targets provide another level of assurance that our emissions targets are grounded in scientific rigor, enhancing our ability to drive meaningful environmental impact.”
From 2022 base year, Centrient’s new commitments include:
- Maintaining its original commitment of sourcing 50% of renewable electricity by 2030
- Setting a new target for its scope 3 emissions at 27.5% reduction by 2031
Centrient’s successful validation of SBTi targets is as well a testament to the outstanding collaboration between Centrient and Schneider Electric. This partnership was instrumental in aligning our ambitious climate goals with the latest scientific standards, ensuring Centrient leads the way in sustainable practices.
With SBTi’s approach, these ambitious targets are a crucial component of Centrient’s decarbonization trajectory. Aligning the company’s goals with the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Agreement not only drives Centrient’s commitment to meaningful climate action, but also ensures accountability in the company’s efforts.
Jean-Luc Giraud, Centrient’s Chief Human Resources Officer, said, “Achieving SBTi validation is a pivotal moment for us. It not only holds us accountable to rigorous standards but also strengthens our position as a leader in sustainable practices and reflects our commitment to positively influence our supply chain. By aligning our targets with the 1.5°C limit, it reinforces our dedication to sustainability, fosters trust with our stakeholders—including customers and partners—and ultimately benefits patients worldwide.”
About Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a globally recognized corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. Since 2015, over 5,000 companies have established climate targets based on scientific principles through SBTi. Centrient is proud to be leading the way in our industry, setting the standard for emissions reduction targets, in alignment with the SBTi standard.
SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest.
The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host their target validation services. SBTi’s partners include the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
*The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
